To create a realistic looking and complete model railway, you need to have not only realistic looking and functional rail tracks and trains but buildings and backgrounds as well. Buildings are of particular importance because they create the setting of your model rail model. For example if you want to build a rail way system that goes back to time period of the Wild, Wild West, you will need buildings that would be typical of that age and landscape. This would include saloons, western style homes and ranches. Modern homes and skyscrapers would have no place in such a setting and would ruin the historical accuracy of your model railway.

The Details Of Railway Buildings

When you are considering which railways buildings to place alongside your train and tracks, it is very important to consider the details of the railway buildings. Most railway structures such as train stations, signal boxes, engine sheds and station platforms are often rusty and weathered in real life. You want to recreate that look and feel when you are designing or considering which railway buildings to use in your railway model. Brick, a popular material used alongside railways should appear faded and weathered. Steel, which was used extensively in the railroad industry should appear rusty. Pay attention to the color, any signs and the architecture on the buildings you plan on using. Make sure they correlate with the time period your model railway system is based on.

Creating A Railroad Building

You can create model railway buildings entirely from scratch yourself or you can print out plans online and follow the instructions to create realistic and professional looking structures. Whatever method you choose remember that a railroad structure should enhance your railroad model and that is should be accurate for the time period represented.
